The title of "Makkal Thilagam" was given to Thalaivar by "Kalkandu" Tamizvaanan. Since he was constantly helping people out with his hand turning red Thiru Muruga Kirubananda Vaariyar Swamigal gave him the title of "Ponmana Chemmal". If my records are right the "Puratchi Thalaivar" title was given by K.A.K.
